Why students plagiarize

More Resources

There seem to be a few simple reasons for plagiarism.

Students are in a hurry and are trying to shortcut the research process.  This leads to copying or adapting their own old papers or those of others

Students have no idea that cutting and pasting hunks of material from various online sources is plagiarism.

Students sometimes fail to read more that a general overviews of the topic online and don’t realize that their own thoughts and reactions to controversial ideas or application of  theories they learned in class to outside readings is what you are looking for.

What every college instructor should do to prevent plagiarism:

inform every student of the definition of plagiarism and the punishments prescribed in the student conduct code and your syllabus.

remember it is your duty to take action against suspected plagiarism or other misconduct by students. Washington state law addresses academic dishonesty. WAC 132C-120-071 Academic dishonesty

consider requiring students have copies available of one page of all articles, web sites and the title pages of books used in research.

consider assigning unique topics for papers or projects every quarter. This requires more creativity but it defeats the utility passing materials between students.

counsel international students that – regardless of the customs and practices in their own country – the college will strictly hold them to the American standard that plagiarism is forbidden.
