Winter Classes 2010
There are lots of electives online for students in the Library and Information Services AAS Degree program and the certificate program of study. Online classes fill up fast!
Advising
Students if you have completed less than 30 hours of credits at SFCC, you will need to meet with an advisor before you can register for classes. You can be advised via email, in-person, or over-the-phone by talking with a library science instructor or academic counselor at SFCC.
Note: For students currently in the library science program you can graduate using the 2008-2009 program guide or the program guide for 2010 or later graduates. The main difference between the change in degree requirements is for students graduating in 2010 or later, you can opt to follow the 2010 program guide and will graduate with an AAS Library and Information Services Degree and are required to take 10 cr of Computer Skills classes (with the rest consisting of approved electives).
Online Electives
Students may also take the following online or onsite electives from the following courses: education, early childhood education, ASL, foreign language, Information Systems, Business Technology, CAPPS, MGMT 223, ENGL 111 Intro to Lit, SPAN, or other electives with approval of the library technician advisor in order to meet the 90 required credits for the AAS degree. FAQ About the Library and Information Services Program

1. Are all of the courses online for the AAS degree and certificate?
Yes, all of the courses are online with the exception of the internship which is done at a library in your area. There are no residency requirements.
2. Are there any prerequisites to the program?
Anyone can enter the program of study.There are no prerequisites required. You are NOT required to take any placement tests (unless you specifically want to take ENGL or MATH courses). It is highly recommended that you take the COMPASS reading/writing assessment test if you are unsure if you have the reading/writing skills needed to take college level courses. You can take the COMPASS test at SFCC or at another college site around the U.S. Visit the NSEC site for information about assessment testing.
3. Is course content online?
Yes, the course content is online and delivered via Angel software. A printer is highly recommended. Textbooks are only required for a few LMLIB classes. Textbooks are usually required for other electives--this will vary from course to course.
4. Who should enter this program of study or who can take classes in this program?
Students interested in paraprofessional positions in libraries; employees who want to take library science coursework to assist with job training and promotion; and students who want to try out library science classes before entering a Master's level program; and students who are interested in education paraprofessional positions in schools or school libraries.
5. Can credit be awarded for previous library work experience or if I work in a library?
Yes, credit can be awarded with approval through our college credit for library experience program.
6. What other online study options are available?
Students can take independent study courses; internships; and electives in other areas of study like early childhood education; education; special education; communication; humanities; and leadership skills classes.

8. What fees and tuition are charged for the program?

9. Are there any discounts or waivers?
Students who are state of Washington employees and over 60 are eligible for a waiver. Financial aid is available for eligible students. Veterans are encouraged to apply. Students who can get credit for previous work approval effectively get a significant discount on selected classes.
10. Where are your students located?
Students in the program are from Washington state, Idaho and around the US.
11. Can I transfer college credit to your institution?
Yes, college credit for other courses can be applied to this program of study.
12. Can I take classes at my local college and library science classes at your college?
Yes, students can take electives or other courses at a local college and take classes at SFCC. This is a great way to save money on selected classes.
13. How long has your program been around?
The library sciences program at SFCC has been offered since 1977. The online program has been available since 2007. The program follows the ALA recommended guidelines for library paraprofessional training. SFCC is a regionally accredited community college.
14. What other programs do you offer?
The online program at SFCC offers an online AAS degree, online certificate and also offers a joint program (mix of onsite/online courses) with the Education Paraprofessional program at SFCC. Students can also (with carefully advisor planning) combine library science courses with other degree programs at SFCC.
15. Can I transfer to a four-year college with my degree?
Yes, Whitworth University accepts the entire AAS degree as a transfer into the adult evening bachelor's degree completion program. Other universities will accept some credits, but probably not all (this depends on your transfer institution). Check with an advisor if you are planning to transfer, so you can select generally transferable electives.
16. When can I start in the program?
You can start in the program at the beginning of any quarter. Depending on number of courses taken each quarter, previous college credits, and the quarter you entered the program, the AAS degree can take two years to complete (however, for some students it may take less than two years).
