Open Access Resources
Most scholarly journals are still available only for a fee or subscription (or through a subscription database, like those you can access through the SFCC library website), but there are some journals that publish their content to the web for free.
Search Engines and Directories
DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals
"A one stop shop for users to Open Access Journals," the DOAJ facilitates browsing and searching of free, peer-reviewed journals available online. You may have to wade through a fair bit of scientific and technical publications, but there are some relevant journals indexed here, including most of the titles listed below.
The familiar Google interface applied to scholarly searching. The results on Google scholar can be a bit of a mixed bag, and not all the articles retrieved will be open access (i.e. there may be a fee to see the full text). Before you give up on an article or drop cash to see it, though, see Jan's Google Scholar Guide for information on how you can add a "library link" in Google Scholar to check whether an item is available among SFCC's subscription resources.
Individual Journals
Americana: The Journal of American Popular Culture 1900 to Present
Free journal on American popular culture in general, with a few interesting articles on monsters in film and elsewhere. There's no easy search provided on the website, but you can search on Google using site:www.americanpopularculture.com/journal/ as part of your search phrase (Here's an example search for "zombie").
Not a formally refereed journal, and not all the contributors are proper scholars, but you'll still find plenty of great content relevant to monsters on film. And mercifully, unlike many online academic journals, there's actually a search box.
Journal of Criminal Justice and Popular Culture
A journal exploring the intersection of crime and popular culture published by SUNY Albany. Again, no obvious search, but you can google using site:http://www.albany.edu/scj/jcjpc/ as part of your search phrase (Here's an example search for "slasher" with some interesting results).
Slayage: The Journal of the Whedon Studies Assocation
A peer-reviewed journal on all things related to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. No, really.
