Showtime : a history of the Broadway musical theater by Call Number: 792.6097 STEMPELISBN: 9780393067156Publication Date: 2010Stempel (Fordham Univ.) demonstrates devoted scholarship, steering his work from "strict linear narrative" to a history of data and ideas "as these correspond to changing cultural pressures over time.. He proceeds from pre-Civil War theatricals to the beginning of the 21st century and organizes each chapter around a theme for a period; e.g., "A Shadow of Vulgarity" covers the Jazz Age and musical revues, and "Away from Broadway" explores alternative and off-Broadway shows. While giving an overview of the specific genre, Stempel pauses to examine selected musicals in detail (dialogue, lyrics, music), from The Black Crook (1866) to Floyd Collins (1996). Thus, the history is not only comprehensive but also presented in depth. Extensive bibliographic references and a comprehensive bibliography attest to the author's scholarship. But one can ignore the apparatus and just enjoy a good read and the excellent illustrations. Summing Up: Highly recommended. R. D. Johnson
