Climate Empowerment: International frameworks - inspiring change
Nations and communities taking action
United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) came into force in 1994 with 198 countries having ratified the goals of the Convention. The ultimate aim of the UNFCCC is "to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations, at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human induced) interference with the climate system." It further states that, "such a level should be achieved within a time-frame sufficient to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change, to ensure that food production is not threatened, and to enable economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner."
Article 6 of the UNFCCC convention, "seeks to reduce the impact of climate change by enabling society to be part of the solution. Education and training are integral in enabling citizens' contributions to local and global efforts to meet the climate change challenge."
