- Statistic BrainTons of interesting statistics on in many areas of interest but sometimes it's difficult to find the source and date. Watch out for the many advertisements scattered throughout the information.
Quick Statistics
The first step is to consider who would collect the information or statistic you need. Do you need national, international or local statistics? Don't be surprised if the most recent government statistics are two years old or more.
- Zanran: Statistics Search EngineUse search options they are very helpful in limiting by country and currency. This is a mega-search engine and you will need to register but there is no junk mail. You may want to try some of the subject specific sources listed below first.
- Center for Disease Control (CDC)- Transportation & motor vehicle safetyIncludes statistics on child safety seats, seat belts, pedestrian accident etc.
- Pew Research TopicsThe Pew Foundation does a lot of polling the opinions, habits and beliefs of the American public.
- Census A-ZCensus information by subject. This is the easiest way to access the census.
- American FactFinder - Census data by locationA quick way to find census data by state, city or zip code.
- StatsAmericaAccessible compilation of city and state statistics on business, taxes, education and other data collected by the governments.
- STATS: We Check out the Numbers Behind the News.A non-partisan, nonprofit site takes major issues and news stories and analyzes them solely from a quantitative and scientific perspective. Hot topics found in the news and society such as alcoholism, obesity, global warming, and addiction are covered in detail and debunk particular claims or stereotypes through hard data. The site also offers a page where statistical terms and particular data tools are described. A blog discusses issues found in current events

- Bureau of Justice Statistics (U.S.)Great source for crime statistics. Use the topictab to find crimes by type and statistics on recidivism, capital punishment, parole and police behavior
- FBI Statistics and PublicationsFederal Bureau of Investigation focuses on crime mostly in the U.S. but some international information.
- The FBI VaultOlder paper documents and statistics have been scanned and digitized. Nice subject index is provided.
EDUCATION
- CIA World FactbookFactual information about foreign countries.
- The World BankExplore reports by topic or generate tables of data which is a bit more complicated.
- OECD Organization for Economic Cooperation & DevelopmentData for international comparisons. Charts may be downloaded to Excel.
