Navigating eBooks: Using the Table of Contents and Searching Within an eBook

This section describes how to get around eBooks easily in the EBSCOhost eBook collection. Specifically, it describes how to use the Table of Contents feature to navigate to a specific section and how to search within an eBook for a given keyword.

Using the Table of Contents Feature

From the main page of the EBSCOhost ebook collection, select a book that interests you from the Highlights or Featured eBooks section and click on the thumbnail of the cover. The page that appears will show you brief information about the book, including author, title, and subject headings. Click on the "eBook Full Text" link on the left to begin viewing the book itself.

From this view, you can use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to advance through the pages one-by-one. You can also jump to a specific page by typing it in the box and pressing the go button.

Advancing page by page, though, can be a little cumbersome. An easier way to get around a book is to use the table of contents displayed on the left-hand side. The table of contents displays the different section and chapter titles in the book. Click on any one of these to jump to that section in the book.

Searching Within an eBook

If you just completed the previous tutorial, you may still have an eBook open on your browser. If not, go the EBSCOHost eBook collection and click on any title in the Featured eBooks or Highlights sections. Then, on the next page, click on the "eBook Full Text" link to view the book itself.

Once the book loads in your browser, look for the magnifying glass icon on the right-hand menu and click on it.

A "Search This eBook" field should appear at the top of your screen. Enter a keyword or phrase you wish to search for. Best to stick to a simple keyword or short phrase. Click the "Search" button.

The search will now display a list of the pages on which your search terms appear. You can click on any of these results to jump to that page. When you're done searching, you can click the magnifying glass icon again or the X button in the upper right to dismiss the search window.
