Advising and ALA Library Support Staff Certification Information

Advising

Counselors are available to help you with academic advising. Advisers and counselors help you find out which classes you need take and when you should take them. You can also receive help planning your schedule to best fit your financial aid options and receive unofficial transcript evaluations. Please contact Paula Swan, paula.swan@sfcc.spokane.edu or schedule an appointment with an academic advisor. 

If you are planning to enter the LiS AAS or Certificate program, please contact Paula Swan to develop your educational plan, discuss transfer of prior academic credits, prior learning or other questions about the program and library careers.

ALA Library Support Staff Certification

Students graduating from the LiS program may apply for the ALA Library Support Staff Certificate program certification (and pay an additional fee to the ALA LSSC program). The application and fee process is handled by the ALA LSSC program. Students may opt to only take the ALA LSSC competency courses below, if they are taking courses for professional or job development. Students graduating from the LiS AAS degree program will take all of the classes below. Students graduating from the LiS Certificate program will need to substitute LMLIB 222 in spring for either the LMLIB 224 class or the LMLIB 135 class. Students must take the three core competency classes and three elective options. The following courses meet the competencies outlined by the ALA Library Support Staff program.

Core Competencies and Aligned Classes (students should take all three of these to meet the core competency requirement)

  • LMLIB100 Introduction to Library Organizations and Careers Foundations of Library Service Core Competency

  • LMLIB126 Library Technology and Services for Educational Support Technology Core Competency Option

  • LMLIB117 Library Outreach and Services for Diverse Communities (pending renewal for Communication and Teamwork Core Competency)

Elective Competencies and Aligned Classes (students choose from three classes below to meet the elective competency option)

  • LMLIB115 Library Organization and Collections Collection Competency Elective Option

  • LMLIB220 Technical Services and Cataloging Cataloging and Classification Competency Elective Option

  • LMLIB116 Circulation Systems and Access Services Access Competency Elective Option

  • LMLIB222 Reference and Information Services Reference and Information Services Competency Elective Option
